How To Get Good At Golf
In 5 Simple Ways

Getting good at golf has lots of different factors. This article will address how to get good at golf in five simple ways. Continue reading to learn how to get better at golf.

1. Set Short And Long Term Goals

One of the best ways to become a better golfer is to set goals. Setting short and long term goals will help you address the areas in your game that you’d like to improve on. To make this as effective as possible, write down your goals in a measurable way. You’ll want to make S.M.A.R.T goals.

S.M.A.R.T stands for the following:

  • Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
  • Measurable (meaningful, motivating)
  • Achievable (agreed, attainable)
  • Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based)
  • Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive)

Using this guideline for goals will help you get better at golf. For more information on how to set SMART goals click here

2. Take More Time To Practice

Increase your practice rounds if you want to become a better golfer. No one becomes an amazing golfer overnight, you need practice. Heading to the driving range is great, but doing practice rounds will allow you to exercise your mental and physical game. Practice rounds can give you a real sense of what it’s like to play with bunkers, slopes, elements etc. that a driving range doesn’t provide. After you’ve done your practice round evaluate your game. Take note of your missed shots, and what you can do to improve.

3. Create A Routine

Creating a routine will assist you in becoming a better golfer because it helps build muscle memory. You’ll notice that the top golfers have routines that they do before every shot. Once you’ve created a routine that feels good to you, make sure to repeat it before every shot. Doing so will help you stay calm during critical shots in tournaments or a fun competitive round with friends.

4. Hold Your Pose

No matter what kind of shot you’re taking, hold your pose after every shot. Holding your pose means that your swing was properly synced, had rhythm, and the speed of your swing was adequate through impact.

5. Play Ugly

One of the best ways to get good at golf is to play ugly. Take shots from the rough, play from tricky positions etc. Here’s what Scott Greorgy has to say about the Worse Ball Drill:

“Scott Gregory, a rookie on the European Tour, credits it with helping him become a complete player. “There's no better way to get good at playing golf ugly,” he says. The concept is simple: Starting on the tee, hit two balls from every position, playing only your worse ball, until you’ve holed out. The key is maintaining your pre-shot routine and concentrating on every shot. Let's say, for example, you're playing a par 4, and you hit two drives, one in the fairway and one in the rough. Play your next two shots from the rough. If one ball lands on the green and the other in a bunker, play your next two shots from the bunker. If you can make par playing your worse ball, you've accomplished something. The lasting benefit, however, is conditioning yourself to handle adversity and improving your ability to play trouble shots.” - Alan Pittman (Golf Digest)
