What’s The Difference Between Chipping And Pitching?

The difference between chipping and pitching is: Chipping is a short game shot that rolls farther than it flies, while Pitching is a short game shot that flies farther than it rolls. A chip shot is a one-lever move where more of the shoulders are used without a wrist hinge. A pitch shot is a two-lever motion that includes the trunk and wrist.

Improve chipping and pitching today by following the steps below!

Chipping Technique

For the best chipping technique, follow the tips below.

1. Have Proper Stance

The first step to having the best chipping technique is to have proper posture. If your posture is wrong, you’ll be hindering your progress. The proper golf posture is when you bend forward from the hips, and let your arms hang directly below your shoulders. If you are squatting it will lead to inconsistent contact.

2. Hit Down To Make The Ball Go Up

When you’re chipping you need to get it airborne. To execute this chipping technique you will need to hit down to make the ball go up. You will need to keep your upper body tilted towards your target. The reason for this is because it will help you make a descending blow, thus getting your golf ball airborne.

3. Chipping Warm-Ups

One of the best ways to get better at chipping is to include it in your warm-ups. Here’s a chipping drill to improve your technique:

Hula Hoop Chipping Drill

For this chipping drill you will need a hula hoop. Place golf balls in 5-yard intervals from the hula hoop. You will then chip the closest ball within the hula hoop. Once you feel comfortable chipping the balls that are closest to the hula hoop move back further and practice chipping from there. Getting your chips within a hula hoops distance from the hole may indicate that you’re getting up-and-down a lot.

Pitching Technique

Follow the golf pitching tips below to achieve better scores.

1. Hands And Wrists

One of the best golf pitching tips is to use your hands and wrists. Using your hands and wrists will help you swing steeper, thus increasing the spin and launching your ball higher.

2. Wedges

When picking your wedge for a pitch shot, make sure you pick one that has a high amount of loft and bounce. Having bounce prevents your club from digging. Different bounces create different outcomes. If you play on hardpan, you might need a wedge that will help you dig. Playing on soft surfaces may need more bounce. Practice with your wedges and see what works best for pitching.

3. Pitching Drill

To improve your golf pitching technique you should learn how to control the distance of your pitch shots. One pitching drill you can try is the Triple Backswing Drill. All you need to do is pick 3 backswing lengths for your pitch shots. Measure the distance between each backswing length. This pitching drill will help you take the guesswork out of your pitch shots. Here’s a visual representation of this drill.
